Is history a collection of facts, or just a meal prepared by a biased chef? Dr. John Fontaine and ANI Buddy tackle the "Positionality Paradox" and explore why the "Chef" (the historian) matters more than the "Fish" (the stories).

"Canada’s history is very interesting; but it is not factual.” History is Unreal is a podcast that helps post-secondary students and lifelong learners understand that history is not based on facts, but instead on the biases and contexts of those who wrote them. Each podcast will look at topics in history students often encounter that are incorrectly stated as fact. We will work to correcting these errors and move toward a more evidence-based and better interpretation of Canada’s past. And yes, we will share a few cool (and unreal in a good way) histories along the way.
My AI co-host, ANI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence), will utilize Large Language Models to process vast datasets to provide analysis. The problem? ANI, in her analyses, will reflect current biases from our 'mostly' western world. Ironically we have an AI bot recounting humans' biases (next word analysis at its best). This allows us to identify, deconstruct, and move beyond the limitations of current historical narratives to help students evolve from memorizing someone else's 'unreal' (fake) history toward a better and deeper and more 'unreal' (better) understanding of Canada’s history.
